Window on Today and Tomorrow

We have finished working on our Window on Today and Tomorrow. Some girls widened their windows and some earned their openings.

During December we received our Healthy Lifestyle outlook as a group. We had a Celebration of Lights. One girl brought in a menorrah and explained the oils and their significance. Another girl brought in an Advent wreath and we talked about the candles. Kwanzaa, Yule, and the symbolism of candles, lights, and fire were discussed. We made candles and sang songs about light. On another night a mom who is a nurse came in and discussed some first aid things. We pulled the items out of a doctor's bag and explained how to use them. The biggest hit was my cell phone and a tuning fork which tickled behind their ears. For first aid you may like to visit a boy scouting page and for firesafety tips. We had our Holiday party complete with beaded Christmas candy canes, presents and cookies. We shared our good fortunes in a Christmas food hamper which we sent to our local food bank.

November was a busy month, but then we are always trying new things. We received our food fun outlook as a group. We had a pizza party and learned about the food groups from a nutritionist at a local market, Market Fresh. Did you know that a pizza can contain all of the food groups? One of the moms is a physiotherapist and she brought in a really neat spine. We talked about safety when playing sports and how to find our heartbeats in our necks and wrists. We went to a gymnastics club and jumped on trampolines, walked the beam and some other fun things. A quilter came in and showed us some really neat quilts. We talked about recycling and friendship in quilting. We made situpons and stuffed them with recycled old clothes.

During the month of September and October we concentrated getting to know one another and on our enrollment ceremony which was a lot of fun.
